Deathmatch.. LPB only? - When Quake first came out, about 95% of us, when laggin' like hell whenever we joined a Quake server. Therefor, most of us gave up Internet playing. So what was left for those who where tired of modems, and high ping? The answer was simple .. Quake Bots - using Quake's programing language, QuakeC, people tried coding deathmatch roBots, for people wanting to deathmatch without having to pay sky-high phone bills, and such. There where plenty of bots out there, but none which really made you feel like you where really deathmatching against another human. Until the.. Reaper Bot - .. hit the 'net. It had everything you could ever want. It learns levels as it plays them, picks up and uses all items, roams around. Just as a real player! well.. almost that is... I remember playing the reaper for the first time. As the "Joe quake" i then was, it felt totally awesome running around levels, killing "humans" that you knew where fully, and truly roBots that you're computer controlled. but then Steve Polge got hired by Epic Megagames - .. to work on Unreal, therefor the ReaperBot has never been updated since 11/15/96. Still, this is the very best bot out there.. Some people have de-compiled the Reaper, adding new modifications like the new Deathmatch 4 rules, and bots to the scoreboard. many of these mod's may be found in cdrom.com's bots directory. This review, was not done with the original ReaperBot, but a reaperbot, modefied with the ScoreBoard hack. (Which you can do you'reself by following the RIP's on Inside 3D) All this hack does it to make the bots come up on the scoreboard, and make them have different colors. Final words - To date, this bot is the best out there. Hopefully, we will see soon that someone can make a bot which will make the Reaper a run for it's money.. But until then, the reaper is the best buy for those who want to deathmatch without those phone bills. A must try for everyone! |
